Shopify vs WooCommerce: which is right for your online store?

Shopify and WooCommerce power a huge share of the world’s online stores. Both can work brilliantly, but they suit different businesses. Here is how to choose.

The short answer

Choose Shopify if you want a store that is quick to launch, easy to run and maintained for you. Choose WooCommerce if you want full control, deep customisation and a store that sits inside a content-rich WordPress website.

How the costs work

Shopify is a hosted platform with a monthly subscription. Hosting, security and updates are included, and many features come from paid apps. Transaction fees may apply if you use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify’s own payments, where available.

WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin, but you pay for hosting, premium extensions and maintenance. Costs can be lower or higher than Shopify depending on how many extensions you need and who looks after updates.

Flexibility and customisation

WooCommerce gives you the source code and database, so almost anything can be customised: complex pricing, B2B rules, unusual checkout flows. Shopify is more structured; most customisation happens through themes and apps, which is simpler but sometimes limiting.

Maintenance and security

With Shopify, the platform handles server security and core updates. With WooCommerce, you or your developer must keep WordPress, plugins and hosting secure and up to date. A maintenance plan is essential.

SEO and content

Both can rank well when set up properly. WooCommerce has the edge for content-heavy sites because WordPress is a mature content platform. Shopify has good SEO basics and fast hosting out of the box.

Local payments and markets

Check which payment gateways and local methods each platform supports in your country, such as cash on delivery, buy-now-pay-later or local bank transfers. This often decides the choice for stores in the Gulf, Southeast Asia and Europe.

Our recommendation

For most new brands that want to start selling quickly, Shopify is the safer choice. For stores with complex requirements, large content needs or existing WordPress sites, WooCommerce is often better. We build on both and will recommend the right fit after understanding your products and plans.
